Prevention and Further Treatment

Sadly there is little to be done to prevent varicose veins development or recurrence

Varicose veins are very common but risk factors include family history, as there is a strong genetic element.  Older age, sedentary lifestyle and obesity are also risk factors.

The good news is that once treated, the vein is obliterated and no longer present.  Recurrence sometimes occurs as the body can grow new veins, however, it must be noted that this can take around 10 years or more.

Unfortunately some people are just very good at growing varicose veins!

Regular exercise and health eating are thought to help, but even that is seldom successful!

We have recently seen adverts for creams or drugs that tackle varicose veins but there are none that we can recommend which are effective.

After many years of experience tackling varicose veins, we do know that regular maintenance with sclerotherapy can achieve good results.  The earlier varicose and thread veins are treated the better the long term cosmetic outcome.
