Varicose Vein Treatment: What You Need to Know
At The British Vein Institute, we follow the latest NICE guidelines to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based treatments for varicose veins. Here's what you need to know about your treatment options.
Do I Need Treatment for My Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic
issue—they can cause pain, swelling, itching, and skin changes. You may
need treatment if you have:
✅ Pain, swelling, or discomfort in your legs
✅ Skin discoloration, eczema, or hardening around your veins
✅ A previous or current leg ulcer (open sore that won't heal)
✅ Bleeding or worsening symptoms over time
Your Treatment Options
1. Endothermal Ablation (First Choice Treatment)
- The most effective and least invasive option.
- Uses heat energy (laser or radiofrequency) to seal the damaged vein.
- Quick procedure with minimal downtime.
- High success rate with low risk of complications.
2. Foam Sclerotherapy (If Heat Treatment Isn't Suitable)
- A special medical foam is injected into the vein to collapse it.
- A good alternative for patients who cannot have laser or radiofrequency treatment.
- May require multiple sessions for the best results.
3. Surgical Removal (If Other Treatments Aren't Possible)
- Traditional surgery (ligation and stripping) is used only when other options are unsuitable.
- Requires a longer recovery period but may be necessary in some cases.
What About Compression Stockings?
- Compression stockings are NOT a first-choice treatment for varicose veins.
- They may help relieve symptoms but do not cure the condition.
- They are mainly recommended for venous ulcers or patients who cannot have treatment.
What Happens After Treatment?
- Most treatments allow you to walk immediately and return to normal activities within days.
- Compression bandages or stockings may be recommended for a short period.
- A follow-up ultrasound scan may be required to check your results.
